As a school leaver, Elise started her career as an R&D Engineer. "At Aurubis Beerse, you get the chance to start your career strong," says Elise.

  • Elise Venken
  • 25 years old
  • R&D Engineer
  • Working for Aurubis Beerse since February 2024
  • Hi Elise, can you tell us how you ended up at Aurubis Beerse?
In secondary school, I studied science mathematics. My interest in chemistry led me to study industrial engineering in chemistry. HR Beerse saw my profile and contacted me on LinkedIn. It seemed like an interesting profile with a lot of research and a varied range of tasks. During my application, I spoke to my supervisor for the first time. That conversation had further sparked my interest in Aurubis.

  • How did you experience the transition from student to working at Aurubis?
The first day I met my team and got to know my job responsibilities. Then I received training from my colleagues and attended an external course on pyrometallurgy. Moreover, I was given an extensive tour of the different departments. Thanks to the good supervision, the transition from studying to working was quick and smooth.

  • What projects are you responsible for?
I completed my very first project, which gave me that initial satisfaction. I am currently working with my colleague on a tool that supports operators for refining nickel from a copper alloy. And I perform tests on the heat balance of our anode furnace. For this, I go to the foundry department at different times. I like the fact that I don't always have to sit at my desk. Within R&D, you are always working on different projects, so every working day looks completely different.

  • How is cooperation with other departments?
Every day I work with operators from the foundry. Every morning I am greeted with a good morning. I notice that everyone enjoys helping on projects and it's always a nice cooperation. Without them, I cannot carry out my tests. Within R&D, each colleague has their own departments that they interact with and carry out projects in. It's a balanced distribution across the team.

  • What skills and knowledge are essential for your role?
A chemical background is hugely important. You definitely need that theory, such as how furnaces work. In addition, good communication skills are essential. You discuss the steps taken, results achieved and consult with the departments involved on how to proceed together.

  • How would you describe your team?
We have a very warm team. From the first day I felt at home. You just have to ask something and everyone is ready to help immediately. Besides work, there is also room for celebrating, laughing, ... I will never forget what they said to me on the first day: "everyone is bribing with cake". So if you have something to celebrate, they are definitely open to cake here. And my colleagues are good at baking, as we have seen since the first day (laughs).

  • What advice would you give to students considering working at Aurubis?
Just do it! Students and newcomers to the industry get the chance to work on projects. Colleagues guide you and help where necessary, but you get the freedom to figure it out yourself. At Aurubis Beerse, you get the chance to start your career strong.
